Many students across the nation and within Osceola enjoy concerts, albums, and charity work of the band Rise Against. On March 15th, 2011, the Chicago punk band released their 6th album, Endgame, featuring the single Make it Stop: September‘s Children, a song dedicated to teenagers who commit suicide as a result of being bullied or harassed by their peers because of their sexual, racial, or personal differences. The band, formed in 1999, has had a long history with community involvement, including working with PETA, an animal rights committee, and the band members are all vegetarians. However, the group took a new turn with this new song.
The music video for Make it Stop: September‘s Children features various students living through the struggles of being harassed because of their differences, and at one point in the video, the students portray thoughts of suicide, but resist. Rise Against urges that kids battle through the tough times, and not get discouraged.
Julie Robinson, 11th grade, said “I liked the message; I thought it was something a lot of bands don’t take their time to write about… I think it does make a difference.” After she watched the video, she said, “I like that they made a song about it. People who listen to it are hearing the lyrics. Don’t just try to deal with it yourself, talk to someone.” Her sister, Jamie Robinson, 11th grade, said, “It’s a good message; the goal is to make a difference.”
At Osceola High School, a campaign, known to students as “Stop The Gossip”, also deals with putting as many hurtful rumors or feelings towards students to rest. Osceola’s message is parallel to Rise Against’s new song.
