The student parking lot is constantly being filled and reloaded with new, learning drivers. This creates a hot spot for students to socialize away from the building before and after school hours. However, Deputy Shorter says it can also be a place for crime.
“It’s gotten better [compared to years past], students understand the driving pattern,” Dep. Shorter admitted. “There are a lot less fender benders,” he added, when explaining how the flow of the parking lot when entering and leaving has become smoother than ever.
“I use the cameras, and make random periodic checks” Shorter said. However in high school, drama, and irresponsibility does happen. “There have been several reports of vandalism… six this year… most are either cars being keyed or one incident had soda spilt onto the hood of someone’s car.”
Deputy Shorter said there is a way to keep a crime to a minimum. “If I had my own way, I would only make sure to remind teachers that students should not be allowed in the parking lot during school hours to collect things or meeting people.”
