Taylor Collins, 9th grade, views design ideas for the new pier.

The city of St. Petersburg released 8 designs for the new local pier. Starting February 23rd, locals will vote on their favorite design concept, and can do so until March 6th.  On March 20th, the selection committee will make the final decision on which design will be used.

There are now 7 designs remaining in the competition:

  • The Prospect Pier is a platform that stands over the water, so that people may view the ocean.
  • Destination St. Pete Pier is a clear pyramid surrounded by a boardwalk with restaurants, & a beach.
  • The Pier Park is a park where visitors can hang out and enjoy the fresh air.
  • Blue Pier is a lagoon park, with beautiful landscape and many activities for the whole family.
  • ALMA is a tall, glass tower with a great ocean view.
  • Discover Bay Life consists of a park, pier, and the Marine Discovery Center.
  • The rePier is an urban-looking area, with a beach & boardwalk, where you can purchase snacks and enjoy a relaxing day in the shade.

Several students say that the rePier is their favorite design. Tyler Cottle, 10th grade, says he enjoys the design because it has a beach. Carly Russell, 9th grade, says “Going to the same beach all the time gets boring, so it’d be cool to have a new beach.” Not only do they enjoy the beach, some students like freshman Laura Menendez are glad to see a change in the structure. “It’s cool that the Pier is gonna change because going there gets boring after a while,” says Laura. “It’ll be good to have something different.”
