The Morean Arts Center in St. Petersburg is currently hosting its 19th annual Word & Image High School Exhibit. The exhibition opened on December 26th and lasts through February 7th.

The installment of the yearly exhibit presents feature pieces created by students from Pinellas County high schools. The artwork is located in the Risser Gallery at the art center.
Artwork and writing from seven Warriors, (two freshmen, one sophomore, two juniors, and two seniors) was accepted into the exhibition.

The Word & Image High School exhibition’s topic this year is ‘Imagine That!’ Participating artists were required to complete artwork that shows what they imagine life would be like through two mediums: art and writing.
This is Mr. Locascio’s third year of submitting to the Word & Image exhibition. “It was a loose theme this year,” he said. “The written piece accompanied the artwork. It had to be hand-in-hand. I was looking for writing that was cohesive with artwork that worked well together. It had to be well-crafted,” Mr. Locascio said. Out of the five photographs he submitted, three were selected.
Yazlynn Yost, 10th grade, was one of the artists whose artwork was entered. “I came up with this idea about having me with sticky notes on my face with society written on them.” She added, “I imagined what the world would be like if society suffocated the individual.”
Lucy Baird, 11th grade, took a picture of her sister hanging upside down reaching for ketchup from the refrigerator, as if she were floating. Lucy’s image “was intended to show how differently simple things would have to be done on a daily basis and how much more difficult tasks such as taking ketchup out of the refrigerator would be with just the simple change of human stance.”
Both Yazlynn and Lucy were proud and excited that their artwork was chosen for the exhibition. The awards ceremony will be held at the Morean Arts Center on Saturday, January 23rd from 3-5pm, and the awards will be presented at 3:30pm.
