Osceola’s Winning Writers, Part 1

Two authors at Osceola have recently made rather impressive achievements. Senior Mackenzie Patel was published on the Huffington Post Website, and Junior Brenna Garcia won the grand prize in the Tampa Bay Times Alternate Times Contest. This is not the first time both of these students have been acclaimed for their writing; Mackenzie has been published in the Huffington Post before, and Brenna won Largo Library’s short story contest last year.
“I wasn’t very confident in my writing; I’m usually a perfectionist,” explained Brenna Garcia, in regards to her award winning short story for the Tampa Bay Times Alternate Times contest. Brenna has been writing for a quite a long time, but she hadn’t written anything for a while when she heard about the contest. This inspired her to enter, and she ended up winning the grand prize, $100.

“The story was set in the Civil War, and it’s about a boy in the South after they (The South) won the Civil War.” The south winning the civil war was one of five prompts for those who entered the contest; the Roman Empire continuing to modern times and computers existing in 1833 were among the other choices. Her other award winning story, for the Largo Library Short Story contest, was also about a young boy; in this case, he was a member of a tribe, whom had to protect his homeland.

Among Brenna’s favorite authors are David Clement-Davies and Cassandra Claire, who writes her favorite book series. Brenna asserts that David Clement-Davies writes great descriptive scenes, and that Cassandra Claire has a more comical approach to writing.
