Lady Warriors lead into overtime with a win

UPDATE:  Coach Ziesenheim was named Pinellas County’s flag football coach of the year this week.

Friday night, the Lady Warriors flag football team lost to Robinson High after a record-breaking season. But even before that final match, players say the season was one to remember.  Here’s a look back.

“We truly are a family, we’re always looking out for one another and it doesn’t hurt that we have the two best coaches around,” said Katie Horan, 12th grade. The Warrior flag football team became regional champions in a very late and ecstatic win on Tuesday night. The score was tied 0-0 all game, which forced both teams to go into overtime.

The Warriors won the coin toss, and scored on the third down, but did not make the extra point. Steinbrenner then took the ball and came very close to scoring a touchdown on third down but the Warrior defense stopped them. “I was so nervous watching Steinbrenner on fourth down; they were so close to the goal line and I thought they would score forcing us to go into double overtime” said Horan. Steinbrenner’s quarterback dropped the football when it was hiked to her on fourth down and the Warriors won the game.

Players, parents, and students stormed the field to celebrate the victory of the game and the accomplishment of going to State Championship first round. “If we win on Friday, we’ll have to play Saturday morning; if we win Saturday morning we’ll play Saturday night to be state champions” said Katie Horan. The Warriors will play Robinson on Saturday night and they are ranked number two in the state. “As the underdogs I have a feeling they’ll underestimate us and come out flat” said Katie Horan. Although Robinson is ranked very high in flag football, the Lady Warriors have strengths that they feel like they can use to beat Robinson. “One of our strengths for our team is our determination to keep making school history and our constant support of one another,” said Katie Horan.
