Behind the scenes drama

Lights, Camera, Action.  The stage is set.  The lights are shining and the actors and actresses are in character ready to put on a show.  Students and parents watch as the actors and actresses produce their performance.  But what lies behind the curtains of the drama club?  What goes on behind the scenes and how do the students of drama put on their plays?

We see the students in drama  perform the plays they rehearsed, but we don’t see how they developed from scratch.   There is a lot of time and effort that is put into practicing for the play.  “Practices take up to 8-10 weeks” says drama teacher and the director of drama Mrs. Shellhouse.  The students have to have open auditions to get the certain character/part they want.  Even though there is a lot of practice and work that takes a lot of motivation and effort students keep a positive outlook because of the little things they get to enjoy. “I get to surround myself with people who have the same interests as me,” said Sydney Culbertson, 9th grade.

Practicing and being prepared is important according to another 9th grade student in drama.  “We do improvisation games and group projects to prepare,” she said.  The question is, is how do the students get into character?  “I watch videos on the plays and put myself into their position” she also said.  Currently the students of drama are practicing to perform plays in the near future. There is no specific performance set yet.
