Librarian making changes for a lively library

Mrs. McDougal is the new librarian for Osceola and is enthusiastic to make a difference in the school’s library. “I live right by the skyway and my neighbors told me about the long drive they took to come to school, but (they said) how it was so amazing that they never complained about it. I wanted to come and work here to have that experience also.” When she heard that a librarian job was open at Osceola, she immediately interviewed for the job and was hired. “I love the atmosphere here, but I feel like the library was plain and not interesting to students when I first came to school this year.” She adds decorations to the library to make it livelier and a happier place for students.

“During Halloween I put up decorations to encourage students to use their imagination and make the library more inspiring and comfortable,” she said. Mrs. McDougal hopes to put all the computers in the back and bring all the books to the front to create a cozier atmosphere for the students. She also hopes to create a sliding wall that can separate the library and the testing area so that students may use the library without interrupting others.“The students should be able to use the library whenever necessary, and when testing is going on, it cuts back on their opportunity to use it. I don’t think that’s how things should be.”

Even though ALL of Mrs. McDougal imaginative ideas for the library probably won’t go into effect for a while, she hopes one day Osceola can expand the library to better fit the needs of students. “Ideally, the library should be the center of the school. It physically is, but it should be the center of our imagination, knowledge, and ideas and it is not. I hope one day it will be.”
