Students select their schedules

Students have a decision to make: should they continue high school at OHS or leave school to pursue early college or dual enrollment? Students have been deciding what classes they will be taking next year, and where. But only 11th and 12th graders are allowed to go to SPC. Administration and guidance have been working to get everyone’s schedules together so they can make the master schedule before summer.

Mrs. Campbell, Assistant Principal, said, “We will be done with the master schedule by May and we will have some tweaking to do over the summer.”   The overall schedules will “be done by August,” said Mrs. Campbell. This year the process for next year’s schedules is starting earlier than usual and Mrs. Campbell said, “It will take a little longer this year,” for them to finish making the schedules.

When students decide what classes they will be taking next year they also have other options to consider. There are three main options that students decide from; staying full time in high school, dual enrolment, and early college.

Caroline King, 10th grade, said, “I am not going to be here next year. I will be at early college.” She will be going to SPC like many other students that have decided to do either early college or dual enrollment. Caroline wants to go to early college because, “College will be more relaxed than high school.” She also said that, “no dress code and better schedules,” are advantages to early college. Advanced Placement classes in high school are known to be very rigorous and Caroline said, “I’ve heard early college is easier that most AP classes.”

On the other hand some students have no interest in leaving school to go to SPC. For example Taylor, 11th grade, said, “I’m staying at school because I don’t want to miss out on school stuff.” She also said, “I would miss my friends.”

While many students want to leave because they feel that early college or dual enrollment will better suit them, some students don’t want to leave because they want to finish their high school experience at OHS so they don’t miss any events.
