Cooking up the competition

Every Thursday after school, in room 170, the culinary competition team cranks up the heat on the ovens, turns on the stoves, and cooks up unique and delicious foods to prepare for competitions.

The culinary competition team is “a group of students who compete against other students from other schools,” said Chef Kennedy, the sponsor of the team. The team competes in “three competitions a year,” said Kennedy. Practices are held every week on Thursday in Chef Kennedy’s room. Stuffed chicken breasts and chicken stir fry are just some of the dishes that the students on this competitive team prepare during practice and competitions.

Chef Kennedy likes the team because, “the teams gives the students individual instruction and a sense of urgency when you have limited time during competitions,” said the Chef. Kennedy sponsored the team because, “I figured that it would be a good opportunity to many students and I’ve always had a team,” said Kennedy.

“We lean new techniques every Thursday; we learn carvings, and we have mini competitions every once in a while,” said a new member on the team, Max Lofilin, 10th grader. “My favorite dish is seared scallops in black truffle olive oil with grilled asparagus and oven roasted russet red potatoes, I even made it for dinner,” said Max. “I enjoy cooking and I’ve been cooking for a very long time and it’s just something I love to partake in,” said Max.

If any students are interested in joining the competition team, Chef Kennedy said to come and speak to him directly.
