For the second time, Osceola students took part in the Model UN on Friday the 7th of April. The Model UN is offered in Pinellas County schools but it is up to the specific school if it wants to sponsor this program. In this program, students selected a country and became “delegates” of that country, although each group of the two delegates belong to one council. Following a meeting with other kids at a conference, position papers must be written and submitted. The position paper talks about problems going on in the selected country and how to solve or make the situation better. Mr. Yarborough, sponsor of Model UN, said “you learn the art of compromise, which is a skill that will be useful for the rest of your life”. Before the conference with the other delegates, multiple meetings are held to revise position papers and discuss ongoing problems. Then once in the debate, delegates from the other schools discuss how to make the world better. Through several serious of negotiations, students battle until a resolution is found.  Each country has a plethora of categories such as Disease Control in Humanitarian Emergencies, Ecosystem Management for Sustainable Development, and Women’s Leadership and Political Participation. Returning member Melody Stark said, “The Model UN is a great club to take part of; it strengthens writing skills and opens up a different perspective”. The conference for this year’s Model UN is already over, although you can join next year. For more information you can go to Model UN Pinellas home page or talk to the sponsor Mr. Yarborough.
