On the 17th of April 2025, driver’s education students participated in an exercise that mimicked walking when intoxicated or incapacitated at different stations.
Students wore goggles that mimicked impairment and walked in a straight path on rectangular mats. The goggles mimicked the effects of chemicals like alcohol and opioids. Deputy Thompson stated, “Each and every set of goggles represents a different form of impairment or a different level of BAC.”
Every student had the opportunity to experience a different activity because the stations were switched up. One of the other activities was riding pedal carts around a course. Every student was able to follow the several frequent street signs used in the course. The participating students would then be informed by the officer running the stations that they would need to retake the identical course while wearing goggles for people with visual impairments. The goggles provided a distinct illustration of what it’s like to drive while intoxicated, high, or exhausted.
According to Drivers Ed teacher Mr. Bruch, this exercise “reinforces concepts that they got taught in the class as well as from their parents, including the effects of driving under the influence.”
