At the first football game of the season, it was announced that the Homecoming theme is Luau Lights. Luau Lights is a Hawaiian, beachy theme. This can include things like lei flowers, flamingos, tiki, vibrant colors, etc. Alyssa Onorato, sophomore class president, went on to explain the reasoning of the theme as “Homecoming is supposed to be more fun, bright, party-like.” She also went on to describe past Homecoming themes as “romantic and prom-like” which she and the rest of student council wanted to avoid. They agreed that Homecoming should be lighter and fun than prom’s more professional look.
Nora, a freshman, likes the idea. “I think Luau Lights is a great theme! I feel like there is a lot of potential for unique decorations and outfits.” She also shared a downside to the theme. “Although, I do wonder if people are just going to show up in a Hawaiian shirt and call it a day.” People could show up in grass skirts with shorts underneath them, but nonetheless, this Homecoming will be very colorful and bright.
One sophomore said, “I like the tropical colors and the outdoor themes. The luau lights theme for Homecoming is a fun and relaxed tropical vibe.” This opinion helps put an emphasis on the fun light theme that was explained by Alyssa. Additionally, he highlights the overall vibe that the Homecoming theme is lively and its vibrancy.
Camila Hernandez, a junior, states a more contradicting opinion then the rest by saying, “I feel like the theme doesn’t really fit like Homecoming, I feel like it fits as one of the dress up days but not as the actual theme.” As Camila is coming from an older perspective, this new type of theme that the student council is bringing out could cause some controversy (compared to previous themes) with upperclassmen.
