The search for the best bay area donut

REVIEW

Donuts have always held a special place in my heart. As a kid in elementary school, I would always bring donuts to my class for my birthday and would always have donuts every Sunday for breakfast, but now I want to know which donut is the best of the best. To find the answer for the best bay area donut, I will go to four donut establishments: Krispy Kreme, Frida’s, Fray’s Donut House, and Jupiter Donuts. For a “control” I will be having glaze donuts and will ask for a recommendation from an employee. I will judge the donut to glaze ratio, batter texture, moistness, and overall taste. This is my honest opinion and I am going to be impartial to each donut. This is not a sponsored event, and this is just my curiosity calling me. I am not advocating for any specific lifestyle, but too much of a good thing is not a good thing. That said, I cannot tell you what to eat and how to live your life, but in the best interests of health, please enjoy these treats in moderation.

Krispy Kreme, St. Petersburg

Donut to Glaze Ratio: Good ration, not overwhelming,

Batter texture: Airy and light, like a pastry dough.

Moistness: Not soggy, but moist.

Overall taste: Overall, a very good donut. The flavor was really great and it was a very nice donut. Also, they have hats and I love hats.

Frida’s Café, Largo

Donut to Glaze Ratio: Pretty eh, glaze was okay.

Batter Texture: More like a bread or cake dough.

Moistness: Not dry, but could be better.

Overall: This was a very subtle donut. There was not much wow-factor but it was okay. For this place specifically, I would recommend getting one of their cakes or cupcakes instead.

Fray’s Donut House, St. Petersburg

Donut to Glaze ratio: Really sweet, but not overwhelming. Pretty good ratio.

Batter Texture: Airy and light, pastry-type batter, melts in your mouth.

Moistness: Not soggy, but melts in your mouth. Very nice medium.

Overall: Fray’s is a really nice family place. The donut was really tasty and had a very honeybun-like flavor. The way it melts in your mouth is pretty fantastic. The shop features a daily special, which is a great way to try new flavors.

Jupiter Donuts, Palm Harbor

Donut to Glaze Ratio: Really sweet, maybe honey based. Very good ratio, warm as well.

Batter Texture: Airy dough, melts in your mouth. Really fresh.

Moistness: Moist, but not wet.

Overall: An amazing donut. The glaze donuts are freshly glazed and have a melt-in-your-mouth consistency. They also offer specialty donuts, which are really good as well.
