On January 6, 2026, the Boys Wrestling team won District Duals. The tournament was held at Pinellas Park High School. The tournament included some hardships for the team; however, Osceola fought through their final matches against the Patriots.
Although Osceola didn’t have it easy against Pinellas Park as Dean Wilson, a wrestler, described the final matches as “neck and neck the whole time.” Each team had their winning and losing matches that added up to the final tiebreaking match.
Coach Smalley, wrestling coach, highlighted the tie-breaking match and the wrestler that won that match for the team: “Kiet Nguyen moved up a weight to beat Pinellas Park to get victory.” Kiet’s match was the final of the night with the pressure of moving up a weight class and it being the deciding factor for the win for Osceola, and he pulled through which is recognized by Coach Smalley.
Kiet Nguyen had this to say about going into his tiebreaking match. “Knowing my opponent is somebody that has bested me before, I went in knowing either I redeem myself now or I live on with my failures.” Not only was the match eventful, but the atmosphere around it was also energetic, with loud cheering and applause for each team.
During this final battle for the title of District Duals Champions, the atmosphere of the room during the match was described as “electric as both teams and fans were going crazy.” Coach Smalley also said, “when we found out it was a tie, it was nerve wreaking to see who would win.” But after all the stress, they finally won the match.
To wrap things up, Coach Smalley stated some key take aways from the tournament as he says it was a “full team effort” with “big wins up and down the lineup and even in losses we found out ways not to give up team points.”
